Case File No. 0629 β€” The interrogation of Danny FAFO

At 2:47 in the morning, every radio in the city that was not supposed to be on turned itself on.

Mint static first. Then a needle. Then a voice you feel in your fillings: β€œAgent Radio. You are now listening to a live interrogation. The subject has waived nothing, because the subject does not read.”

The room is black the way only broadcast black can be β€” black walls, black table, one mint waveform breathing on a dead monitor, and a lie detector the size of a jukebox with its needle resting easy on green. Across from it sits a man in a three-piece suit tailored over a clown collar. Rubber nose. Paint smeared like he slept in a car wash. A gold chain heavy enough to be evidence on its own. The folder on the table says DANNY FAFO. Danny slides the folder back across the table like it is a menu and he has already eaten.

β€œReach me, baby,” he says, to no one. The needle does not move. Even the machine knows that is just marketing.

The first question comes from nowhere and everywhere at once β€” the walls, the monitor, the fillings again. Dr. Miles Droolson does not appear. Dr. Miles Droolson never appears. He asks in bars, because a case file you cannot rap along to is just paperwork.

Version one: Danny was with the church the whole night. The church got big off his name, he explains, and that is big enough. The needle pegs red. Somewhere under the table a clown horn honks once, softly, dead on the 808. Danny looks down at his own shoes like they betrayed him.

Version two: he was handing out turkeys. On camera. In the hood. The monitor helpfully rolls the fictional footage β€” there he is, mid-toss, mid-smile β€” then keeps rolling as he climbs into a car and drives directly back to the hills. Needle: red. Horn: honk. The hook goes citywide and the city starts singing along with the evidence: pull up FAFO, beep-beep, baby. The beep-beep is the horn now β€” quantized, involuntary, perfect.

Version three arrives without being asked for, the way all Danny's best stories do. London. He was in London. He might book a flight out to London, which is a strange alibi for a man currently strapped to a polygraph. The needle pegs so red the room's whole temperature changes, mint to crimson, like the walls are blushing for him. Agent Radio does not hijack a frequency for privacy; the fictional timeline is watching live, and the clip becomes a reaction meme before he finishes the sentence.

Droolson's voice never rises. That is the scary part. It just keeps time. He asks about the houses built, the souls healed, the names on the will. He asks how the money came in, and Danny, sweating through the collar and the paint, gives the only accounting he has: like it grew off a tree. Like it came in for free. The polygraph produces a sound polygraphs should not legally make: applause.

Then the reveal. Danny does what every charlatan does when the questions get too accurate β€” he demands a face. Who is asking? Who are you? He kicks back the chair and spins around the mirror-black room, nose squeaking with the turn. And there is no interrogator. There never was. Just the monitor, the mint waveform, and the radio itself, patient as weather. The interrogation was the song. The song was the case file. He has been answering the hook this entire time, live, on every frequency at once.

Which is when Danny FAFO β€” unprompted, unasked, un-accused β€” leaps up, grabs a microphone that was never offered to him, and delivers the one confession nobody requested:

I'M NOT A COP B****

The needle does not peg red. The needle achieves red. The horn plays a full solo. The monitor stamps the frame in mint capitals β€” NOBODY ASKED β€” and the signal cuts to static.

Case status: OPEN, on account of the subject still talking. Frequency: everywhere. The needle never lied β€” it just kept time. And FAFO stands for exactly what you think it stands for.

Danny found out.

Character files

Danny FAFO · the clown-charlatan

Fictional adult dunce archetype. Occupation: whatever you need him to be, briefly. His clown horn lands on the 808 every time the story changes. Skills: arriving unannounced, leaving unaccountable, beep-beep. Weakness: questions.

Dr. Miles Droolson · the writer

Credited writer of Case File No. 0629 and voice of the interrogation. Appears: never. Heard: always. Method: a lie has a tempo; he turns the metronome on.

Agent Radio · the signal

The mint-band frequency that broadcasts interrogations as songs. It never accuses β€” it plays, and the needle does the rest. β€œIf you can hear us, someone's lying.”

04. CASE FILE No. 0629 marks the fictional night the mint band first came alive.

05. The censor strip uses ICEFAM mint: the network censors you in brand colors.
